DA ARTE INCOMPLETA À MORTE DE UM INSUBMISSO: A MOCIDADE MORTA (1899) DE GONZAGA DUQUE

Resumo: Publicado pela primeira vez em 1899, Mocidade Morta é uma das mais desconcertantes realizações de Gonzaga Duque. Se não foi bem recebido pelos contemporâneos, é hoje um dos marcos do simbolismo brasileiro. Seu interesse para a história da arte brasileira, contudo, não vem de seu valor literário, mas, ao contrário, de seus compromissos com a conjuntura vivenciada pelo crítico. Como roman à la clef, traz diversas alusões ao ambiente artístico fluminense: personagens, situações e obras de arte citadas no romance são referências mais ou menos explícitas a episódios e pessoas reais.

Com Mocidade Morta como ponto de partida, pretendo discutir as demandas colocadas para os críticos cariocas em fins do século XIX, tendo em vista os projetos de modernização da pintura por um lado, e a permanência da instituição acadêmica e seus valores, por outro.

Abstract: Published for the first time in 1899, Mocidade Morta is one of Gonzaga Duke's most disconcerting accomplishments. It is today one of the marks of the Brazilian symbolism. Its interest for the history of art in Brazil , however, doesn't come from a literary value, but, on the opposite, from his commitment with the conjuncture in which he lived. As a roman à la clef, it brings several allusions to the fluminense artistic atmosphere: characters, situations and works of art mentioned in the romance are references more or less explicit to real episodes and people.

With Mocidade Morta as starting point, I intend to discuss the demands put for the carioca critics at the end of the XIX century, having on one side in view the projects of modernization of the painting, and on the other the permanence of the academic institution and their values.
